Best overtaking in Formula 1 – Spa-Francorchamps, 2000

Formula 1 cars on racetrack

It was late August in 2000, and the two double world champions – Mika Häkkinen of McLaren and Michael Schumacher of Ferrari – were competing head to head in points.  After a spin on a wet patch, soon after Häkkinen was right on Schumacher’s tail again, looking to pass him. Schumacher kept him blocked, not leaving any room, and even forcing him to touch the grass on the side of the track. A turn of events in this ferocious fight were brought by catching up with Ricardo Zonta, and, with a brilliant move, Häkkinen did not let his opportunity slip away.

Michael Schumacher

We can only imagine what Ricardo Zonta must have exclaimed when he got passed on both sides by these two giants; Häkkinen’s overtaking was so beautiful, so elegant and yet so vicious, it is no surprise that is gone down as the best overtaking  in the history of Formula One.
