Formula 1 dives into the Florida sea for the first time. Miami is one of the most visited cities in the United States; its beaches, its social life and its climate make it a much desired destination among tourists. The F1 Grand Prix thus becomes a sort of icing on the cake. But the flavor of this cake can be discussed.

The location is gorgeous, sumptuous, electrifying, noisy and with an audience that has never been seen before, a transversal audience, most of which, however, knows nothing of Formula 1.
Downtown Miami.
Downtown Miami.
And here comes the point. F1 has to find new audiences in order not to die, it has to teach itself to those who don't know about it, it has to go more and more to America, the homeland of the show, but what does all this have to do with what the premier class has always been? How would Villeneuve or Depailler be in Miami? Sure they would appreciate the pools but would the rest of the context make them happy?

For heaven's sake, there will be pathos on the track because the cars are beautiful, the drivers are fast and the championship is hard-fought, but if we ask ourselves to summarize this weekend in Florida in one word, we would choose "artificial", of plastic. But Miami has a thousand arms and captures you with its retro atmosphere, with its warm, slow and welcoming charm and then, who knows, … the miracle can be accomplished, a weekend not to be forgotten.

Making its F1 debut in May 2022, the Miami International Autodrome is a temporary circuit, but one designed to have a permanent feel.
Set in the Hard Rock Stadium complex in Miami Gardens, home to the NFL’s famous Miami Dolphins franchise, the track is the culmination of a development process that simulated no less than 36 different layouts before settling on a thrilling, 19-turn lap that provides a street circuit vibe, not dissimilar to Melbourne’s Albert Park.
The inaugural Miami Grand Prix takes place in 2022, the Florida race joining its Texan counterpart in Austin to become the second US race on the calendar – and the 11th different American venue to host a round of the Formula 1 world championship.
A street-track spectacular. With the Hard Rock Stadium at its epicentre, the 5.41 km layout will feature 19 corners, three straights, potential for three DRS zones and an estimated top speed of 320km/h. There are elevation changes too, the main one found between Turns 13 and 16, with the track heading over an exit ramp and under various flyovers across uneven ground. The Turn 14 - 15 chicane, meanwhile, has an uphill approach, with a crest in the middle and then drops down on exit.
The Hard Rock Stadium knows how to put on a show – it has hosted six Super Bowls, two Baseball World Series and numerous rock concerts. Put it at the heart of a track designed to encourage close racing while meeting the highest safety standards and you have a sure-fire winner for spectators. Then there’s Miami itself – famed for its sandy beaches, art deco vibe, vibrant multiculturalism and rich sporting heritage, it’s an essential destination for those visiting the Sunshine State.
When viewing a sporting event in a purpose-built stadium, it’s hard to go wrong. In fact, you could walk around the top deck of the Hard Rock Stadium and see every corner of the track – pretty unique. As for the best passing spots, a seat near Turns 1, 11 or 17 should put you in the thick of the action.
One thing is for sure, this track is going to be FAST. After Turn 1, there are a number of long, sweeping corners that eventually loop round on to what is basically a massive straight – although there are a few kinks at Turn 9 and Turn 10 – that should set up plenty of overtaking opportunities into Turn 11.

2022 Miami Grand Prix, Sunday.
The next section is tighter and twistier (which will mean getting the set-up right isn’t a simple task) before another very long straight and big stop into the Turn 17 hairpin.
That’s set to be another overtaking opportunity towards the end of the lap – as Turn 1 is at the start of it – and means this is a street circuit that should be conducive to good racing, as well as being a thrilling prospect over a flat-out qualifying lap.
To make the circuit more lively, the designers have slightly raised some curves, number 13 and number 16. Swimming pools, luxury hotels and private beaches have been built next to the track. "We did a lot of simulation work to build the Miami circuit. The sequence of corners, all different from each other, from the fastest to the slowest, was designed to increase the likelihood of seeing quite different setups. The exit from Turn 8 will be crucial for lap time, while 9 and 10 could be brawling areas. In the third sector there are Turns 14 and 16 which pass under the Turnpike flyover: they are slow and with a change of slope, so that they are more technical to deal with. It’s a city circuit with challenging corners, high downforce, but there are also long straights and high-speed corners. We will test the race engineers and setups of their cars as much as possible. We want to see a great mix, to have an exciting race." Charles Metcalfe, design engineer at Apex Circuit Design, spoke about the specifics of the Miami track. Metcalfe explained how the circuit was designed to offer exciting races, full of battles between the drivers and with a great variety of setups available. In fact, the Grand Prix will take place between long straights and high-speed corners, but also between tight, slow and technically difficult turns. According to the engineer, the various teams can therefore indulge themselves in the preparation of setups of the single-seaters.
In the photo the entrance to the pit lane.
The director of designers of the Miami circuit said: “we wanted to make sure the track had a 'Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde' personality, with grade changes and lots of traction that require a smooth set-up, along with very high-speed zones where you want a stiffer set-up to get the best out of aerodynamic performance, with adjoining lateral grip when cornering. The sequence from curve 13 to 16 is where we thought about what we call 'error generator': entering turn 14, you don't see the apex of turn 15 until you are on the apex of the previous one. Therefore, the opportunity for the drivers to gain positions for someone in front to overdrive is quite high."

Hard Rock Beach Club hospitality.
Miami GP organizers have released a rendered flyby video highlighting its multiple high-end hospitality zones and grandstands around the circuit – including a trackside ‘yacht club’ and a temporary beach with swimming pools.
A Monaco-style marina is being constructed – complete with a dozen or so dry-docked yachts – that will be positioned on the infield of the long left-handers of Turns 6-8 of the 5.4-kilometre track.
“To bring the glamour and elegance of Formula 1 and the technology of F1 racing to a dynamic, growing city like Miami right now is fantastic,” said Garfinkel, the managing partner of the event and the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium CEO, in a promotional video.

“The idea was how do you create a race for people that are used to going to races to think ‘this is different, this is fun, this is exciting’. I think, first of all, it’s about Miami.
“Miami Gardens and really the whole south of Florida, it’s become a curator of culture when you talk about fashion and art, music, food and sports. It’s a very attractive place.
“I think from a racing standpoint, we’re introducing the best racing in the world and its technology, best engineering, the best cars and the best drivers to, potentially, a large group of people who haven’t been around it or seen it before.
“I think that can have a large impact on peoples’ lives.”
In spite of expensive ticket prices, the event sold out in just 40 minutes – with resale sites now offering grandstand seats at well over $1000.
As part of its hospitality plans, the circuit has constructed a double-decked Paddock Club above the pit lane overlooking the start/finish line, with a second element that has extended eastwards on the run to the inside of Turn 1, where Heineken also has a garden-style hospitality adjacent to the pit lane exit.
Trackside villas overlook Turns 2 and 3 before The Concours Club grandstand, followed by McLaren, Silver Arrows and Ferrari ‘club’ zones. The Palm and 72 Club areas flank either side of the dramatic podium structure on the opposite side of the stadium to the pits.
To reflect Miami’s coastline location, a beach will be created at the circuit by the Hard Rock Club, which promises a 24,000 square-foot zone featuring resort-style pools and two levels of luxury cabanas featuring musical performances near Turns 11, 12 and 13.
Red Bull, which is a ‘founding partner’ of the event, will also construct a giant custom-built ‘Miami-themed environment’ on the opposite side of the track at Turn 11, with an Energy Station that will feature a large trackside viewing platform.
The Miami Dolphins training complex, opened last year at a cost of $135million, will be turned into the MIA Hospitality Village for the race weekend and the stadium itself will be used as a hub for the ‘campus’ events, including art and music shows.
