Charles Leclerc, the flying Monegasque, is part of the small circle of lucky and talented racing drivers who have seen their lifelong dream come true: racing in Formula One and with Ferrari. And Charles did not end up at Ferrari by chance because he has a pure talent for speed. It is not possible to know today, with his career still largely underway, if he is as good as Senna, Verstappen, Hamilton, Schumacher, the giants of recent Formula 1. He certainly does not have their charisma because he is fundamentally a good guy, genuinely in love with racing and Ferrari, a type perhaps more like Villeneuve than Lauda or other illustrious thinkers behind the wheel. His simple, frank and altruistic character, combined with a strong sense of humor, makes him an excellent team player, capable of establishing the best possible relationships with both team members and teammates. He never looks for excuses and candidly and publicly admits his driving and other errors. If one limit can be found in him, besides making too many mistakes, but it is not known whether it is because of him or the insufficient competitiveness of the cars he has driven, it is that of being perhaps too good and accepting decisions of the team that have sometimes heavily penalized him, putting his enormous patience to the test. But, when he sits in the car, Leclerc is really very difficult to beat, none of his teammates have managed to do it up to now and the feeling is that, apart from perhaps Max Verstappen, today in Formula 1 there is no one capable of worrying him.

If to all this we add a visceral love for Ferrari, which he also drives in everyday life, the fact that he has called his boat 'Monza', we get the image of an ordinary man who has a destiny already written, that of bringing the Red back to where it has not been for a long time, on top of the world. If he were to succeed, he has already won in Monza and Monaco, then the prince would become a king.

Two episodes from the life of Charles Leclerc, one told by himself and the other by Maurizio Arrivabene, are the synthesis of his unconditional love for racing and Ferrari:
Charles Leclerc, with the trophy of his victory at Monza with Ferrari in 2024, in front of a painting depicting an embrace between him and his father Hervé.
Herve’ Leclerc, the father of Charles, always wanted to see his son make his debut in F1. However, it was too late for him as he passed away way too soon. But his son Leclerc Jr. will never forget his father passing away, not just because he is not there anymore, but because he once lied to him about his F1 contract! Talking about this, Leclerc shared: “I think he would have been very proud. Because he passed away a year before I got into Formula 1, it was very difficult because I unfortunately hadn’t yet signed my Formula 1 contract, which was the ultimate goal for our family. His last weeks of life have been complicated and I lied to him telling him I made it into F1. I wanted to make him happy and to make him smile and I’ve always been mad at myself for that [lying to him]. My mom yelled at me that day telling me I was wrong lying to my dad like that but, in the end, it wasn’t really a lie because I’m at Ferrari now.” The former Sauber driver further emphasized the importance of joining Ferrari as he felt it was important for him and for his late father. Leclerc said that his father has always been a supportive figure when it comes to good or bad moments.

"Charles knows how to take responsibility. I'll give you an example, telling you an episode. When his father passed away, I found him on the plane, on our charter, to leave for a Grand Prix. I looked at him and asked him: "what are you doing here?" He replied: "I have to win this race. Then I'll come back and bury my father." If a boy can resist this type of pressure and concentrate on the race, what is a Formula 1 Grand Prix compared to this?" Maurizio Arrivabene
Charles Leclerc quotes
Charles Leclerc in a kart with Jules Bianchi.
"I lied to my father and told him I was sick, but it wasn't true. I just didn't want to go to school. He believed me, so I stayed with him. Fate wanted that day he had to go and see his best friend Philippe Bianchi (Jules' father), who ran a karting track at the time. It was an hour and a half from Monaco and I went with him. There was a kart already set up for a child my age and I went for a spin. I drove until the fuel ran out and, on the way home, I said: “this is what I want to do in life.”
Charles Leclerc.
"More Gilles Villeneuve or Alain Prost? I don't know. What I know is that, as soon as I get in the car, I want to win. I don't want to finish second, third, fourth or fifth. I want to win, always. The other positions don't count for anything. I think this is a strong point but, at the same time, I know it can also be a weak point." Charles Leclerc in February 2020

"Racing for this team has been my dream since I was three years old: I used to watch the Monaco Grand Prix from the window of a friend's house and, at the St. Devote curve, I would look for the red car with my eyes. Now I'm the one dressed in red. These are indescribable emotions."

"I knew from the beginning that Ferrari would have been the opportunity of a lifetime. I know how lucky I am to be in this position. It's a dream come true. I've always liked the color red since I was little."
Charles Leclerc in his Ferrari.
"I've always had four goals: the first was to get to Formula 1, the second was to become a Ferrari driver one day, the third was to win in Monte-Carlo. And I've achieved all of these. The fourth is missing, the most important one: to become World Champion and I'm still working on that."
Charles Leclerc in his Ferrari.
“I love Ferrari and I want to win with the Red: this is the only thought I have in my head and I hope that with these words it is clear to everyone. When in my mind I dream of becoming World Champion, I see myself wearing a red suit while getting out of a red car. Every driver, even if they cannot declare it openly, would like to race for Ferrari and I am very lucky to be part of it. I trust the team 100% and the team must also believe in me: I can become World Champion with the Red and I don't think I have to go to Red Bull to win a World Championship." Charles Leclerc at Baku in 2023
"What does it mean to race for Ferrari? We are talking about something really special. I have always dreamed of racing for these colours and to do it a year after making my debut in Formula 1 was simply incredible, a huge honour. The pressure? Obviously there is. You feel a great sense of responsibility and this has always happened. You are in Ferrari. However, I start from the assumption that, every time I get in the car, I just have to concentrate on the job I have to do. If I do it well, the results will come..."

"Am I having fun in F1? Yes and the day I won't have fun anymore I'll stop. I love my job, I love driving, this is what I've always dreamed of doing. Now I'm in F1 with the best team in the world, in my opinion, which is Ferrari and I'm fighting for victory. Life is beautiful."

Charles Leclerc with Schumacher's Ferrari F2003 in Abu Dhabi.
Charles was just five years old when this extraordinary F2003-GA (chassis 229), now owned by Thomas Flohr, founder and president of VistaJet, raced around the streets of the Principality. He would never have imagined, exactly twenty years later, in February 2023, that he would have had the chance to bring it back to life on the Abu Dhabi track where, without holding back, he was able to enjoy the indelible sound of a V10. ‘Schumacher-style’ emotions for Leclerc. The Monegasque posted on social media some images and a video of the special experience he had testing the Ferrari F2003 GA with which Michael Schumacher won the sixth world championship of his career in 2003. The 10-cylinder single-seater bore the initials of the lawyer Gianni Agnelli, who passed away a few weeks after the start of that championship. "Incredible day driving this 2003 beast in Abu Dhabi. Thank you for this wonderful day", Leclerc commented.
Charles Marc Hervé Perceval Leclerc was born on 16 October 1997 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Leclerc grew up as the middle child between older half-brother Lorenzo and younger brother Arthur.
Charles Leclerc with his mother Pascale, who finally got to see the Monza 2024 win.
His father, Hervé Leclerc, was a racing driver who competed in Formula Three in the 1980s and 1990s whilst his mother, Pascale Leclerc, is a former hairdresser. Hervé died after a long illness, aged 54, four days before Leclerc won the feature race at the 2017 Baku Formula 2 round. Two days before his death, Leclerc lied to his father that he had signed a Formula One contract for the 2018 season; he signed with Sauber a month later. His older brother, Lorenzo, was best friends with Jules Bianchi, who was Leclerc's godfather until his death in 2015. His younger brother, Arthur, is also a racing driver who has competed in open-wheel and sportscar racing, winning the Formula Regional Asian Championship in 2022. Leclerc has described his religious stance as "[believing] in God, but [not someone] who would pray or go to church."

The dream comes true for the very young driver: from karting to minor formulas, from the Ferrari Driver Academy to the Scuderia of Cavallino in F1.

Charles Leclerc began racing karts at the age of five on the Brignoles track, managed by Philippe Bianchi, father of Jules, the late driver of the Marussia Formula One team. With Jules, despite being seven years older, he developed a deep bond of friendship. Jules himself convinced his then manager Nicolas Todt, son of Jean, the former president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), to take even the young Charles under his wing.
In 2005 Leclerc won the PACA (Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur) regional kart championship, a victory he repeated in 2006 and 2008. In 2009 he became champion of the French Cadets, before racing the following year in the KF3 class, where he won the Junior Monaco Kart Cup. In 2011 he won the CIK-FIA KF3 World Cup, the CIK FIA Academy Trophy and the ERDF Junior Kart Masters.

In 2012, Charles Leclerc moved up to the KF2 category with ART Grand Prix and won the WSK Euro Series title, as well as finishing runner-up in the CIK-FIA European KF2 Championship and the CIK-FIA Under-18 Karting World Championship. 2013 was Leclerc’s final year racing in karts, finishing sixth in the CIK-FIA European KZ1 Championship and second in the CIK-FIA KZ World Championship, behind current Red Bull F1 driver Max Verstappen. In 2014, Charles moved up to single-seaters, racing in the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps for British team Fortec Motorsports.
During the season he achieved seven podiums, including two victories: one in Monza and the other in the final round in Jerez, where he preceded the Russian Matevos Isaakyan, finishing the championship in second position, behind Nyck de Vries. Leclerc also took part in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 with Fortec, as a guest driver. In the six races he contested, he finished on the podium three times, obtaining two second places at the Nürburgring and the Hungaroring.

October 06, 2014 was a day that marked Leclerc's life. Jules Bianchi, driving the Marussia F.1, had a tragic accident on the Suzuka track and since then Charles' heart has always been in turmoil for the health conditions of his friend. When, following increasingly serious complications, Jules passed away on July 17, 2015, Charles always raced thinking of his friend. These were his lapidary words: "he was my godfather, he taught me everything." But Leclerc's fate unfortunately darkened again when, on June 20, 2017, his father Hervé, at just 54 years of age, passed away prematurely. In two years Charles has seen his two most important points of reference fly away.

In 2015, Charles Leclerc took part in the European Formula 3, driving a car for the Dutch team Van Amersfoort. In the first event of the season, held at Silverstone, he took pole positions in races 2 and 3 and took his first win, in race 3, ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi and Jake Dennis. His second win came the following race weekend, at Hockenheim, again in race 3, while in the other two previous races he took two podiums and three rookie wins.

Leclerc won his third race in Spa-Francorchamps to take the championship lead. However, he finished the season in fourth place, mainly due to chassis damage sustained in a crash with Lance Stroll at Zandvoort. In November 2015, he finished second in the prestigious season-ending Macau Grand Prix.
In December 2015, Leclerc took part in the post-season GP3 testing with ART Grand Prix and Arden International. In February 2016, Nyck de Vries confirmed that Leclerc would race in the 2016 GP3 season and ART Grand Prix signed him the following week. At the end of the championship, on 26 November, after race 1, he was crowned GP3 champion despite retiring during the race.

The week after winning the GP3 title, it was announced that Charles Leclerc would move to Formula 2 for the 2017 season with Prema Racing, alongside teammate Antonio Fuoco, also part of the Ferrari Driver Academy.
Leclerc dominated the first part of the season with five wins and seven podiums in the first 12 races. In the first seven Formula 2 events he managed to get all seven pole positions but the last one, that of the Hungarian Grand Prix, was taken away due to a disqualification due to an irregularity of a differential element on his single-seater. This did not allow the Prema driver to equal the record of consecutive poles in the category, which he shared with Stoffel Vandoorne. In the Spa-Francorchamps event, despite a rain storm raging, he recorded pole number seven and dominated the entire feature race with a 36-second advantage over the second-placed Oliver Rowland.

During the Jerez Grand Prix weekend, Charles managed to get pole number eight, thus breaking the record for the most ‘pole starts’ in the category. In race 1, Leclerc managed to maintain the lead of the race with a good start. In the final stages, the entry of the safety car onto the track, due to contact between drivers Matsushita and Ferrucci, allowed Oliver Rowland to get back into the Monegasque’s exhausts and try to keep the championship open. However, Leclerc only needed to finish in the points ahead of the latter to mathematically win the Formula cadet. And so it was: Charles, resisting the attacks of the DAMS driver, took home the title with three races to spare, finishing the championship with 282 points.

In March 2016, Ferrari announced that Leclerc would be one of two new drivers in the Ferrari Driver Academy (which also included Julies Bianchi) and that he would become a test driver for Haas F1 and Ferrari itself. It was in this capacity that he took part in the first free practice session of the British Grand Prix of the same year, driving the single-seater of the American team.
On May 09, 2016, at the Fiorano circuit, Leclerc tested the Ferrari F14T, completing 300 kilometers necessary for obtaining the FIA Superlicense. In August 2017, the Monegasque completed the first day of testing in Budapest with Scuderia Ferrari aboard the SF70H, recording the best time of the day. In the same month, he drove once again for Ferrari in the 2018 Pirelli tests.
On September 22, Charles Leclerc's participation in four free practice sessions of the 2017 championship with Sauber was confirmed. On December 02 of the same year, he was made official as one of the two drivers of the Sauber Alfa Romeo team for the 2018 Formula One Championship, alongside the reconfirmed Swedish driver Marcus Ericsson.

After a few difficult race weekends in which he failed to particularly shine, on 29 April, at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he scored his first eight championship points thanks to a brilliant sixth place, to which were added top ten finishes in the races in Monaco, Canada, Austria and Singapore and three seventh places in the final GPs of the season: Russia, Mexico and Brazil.
In the 2018 season finale in Abu Dhabi, Charles Leclerc took part in his final race with Sauber Alfa Romeo, finishing in 7th place and concluding his first season in Formula One with 39 points.

In a recent interview Charles Leclerc said: “I had to change my approach compared to Formula 2. In Formula 1 it is better to have a more understeering car because you enter corners faster than in Formula 2; if you exaggerate with the aggression when entering a corner it is easier to lose the car when you accelerate because there is so much power, so an understeering set-up is more suitable. But an understeering car is not part of my driving style. And, at the beginning, I didn’t want to do these set-ups because I didn’t believe it was possible to go fast in that way. Instead, this is how you have to set up the car to exploit it better and with less risk. The current Formula 1 cars allow a high speed when going through fast corners, they have a softer driving because they are equipped with power steering, which is not present in the minor formulas. It gives you a new and different sensation: you take a curve at 300 km/h and yet you can easily turn the steering wheel with just one hand, while with the Formula 2 and the smaller single-seaters the steering wheel vibrates, trembles, you have to correct microscopically continuously. In Formula 1 it is not like that, you feel the steering wheel soft and smooth in your hands. But you have to adapt, because at the beginning you risk making too sudden movements.”

On 11 September 2018, Ferrari made Leclerc’s hiring official with the following press release by then team principal Maurizio Arrivabene: “Scuderia Ferrari announces that, in the next Formula 1 racing season, Charles Leclerc will join Sebastian Vettel in the role of official driver.”
This is Charles Leclerc’s first message as a Ferrari F1 driver: “a dream come true… in the 2019 Formula One World Championship I will drive for Ferrari. I will be eternally grateful to the Scuderia from Maranello for the opportunity given, to Nicolas Todt (his agent) for supporting me since 2011. To my family and to a person who is no longer in this world but to whom I owe everything that is happening to me, my father. I will always be grateful to Jules Bianchi for all the things he taught me, we will never forget you. And thanks to all the people who supported me and believed in me. I will work harder than ever to not disappoint you. But first there is a season to finish with a fantastic team that gave me the opportunity to fight and show my potential. Forza Sauber!”
Quotes about Charles Leclerc
“It doesn't matter what your team is, it doesn't matter what your country is, it gives you goosebumps every time. Congratulations to our friends and rivals of Scuderia Ferrari. Moments like these make this sport special." Mercedes AMG F1 regarding Charles Leclerc's victory at Monza in 2024
Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, with Charles Leclerc, Ferrari.
Hamilton certainly doesn't like Verstappen, given the progress and outcome of the 2021 championship, but we didn't expect a declaration of love for Ferrari in these terms: "Verstappen the strongest rival? No, one of the many I've faced, from Fernando Alonso onwards everyone had great qualities. Who do I support between Leclerc and Verstappen? Charles is very strong. If I could sit with the fans over there I would support Charles. I'm a Ferrari fan." Lewis Hamilton
Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton fighting at Silverstone in 2022.
“Charles did a great job. What a great battle, very sensible driver, clearly a lot different to what I experienced last year. Copse, for example, the two of us went though no problem. But what a battle. We had to have the tyre deficit in order to get passed him, but yeah, really, really amazing weekend.” Lewis Hamilton made a cheeky comment about battling with Leclerc at Copse at Silverstone in 2022
Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton fighting at Silverstone in 2022.
Jean Alesi spent words of enormous value for Charles Leclerc, revealing a certain bitterness for the final result which saw the Monegasque finish fourth in a race at Silverstone that, if it had not been for the wicked choices of his pit wall, he would have comfortably brought home. We find his comment in the ‘Corriere della Sera’: "after Silverstone I recommend keeping the emotions we received: those that Leclerc gave to all of us. I have rarely seen drivers capable of doing what Charles did. Overtaking on the outside at Copse is worth a season! I do not want to make comparisons with some big names in motorsport. I think Leclerc is Leclerc: an absolute monster. Who goes hand in hand with another red monster, the car. The resulting controversies are inevitable around Ferrari. I prefer to think that Leclerc has gained in terms of popularity and awareness, despite not earning the points he deserved."
Sebastian Vettel with Charles Leclerc at Ferrari.
It is well known that Sebastian Vettel has enormous respect for Charles Leclerc, the driver with whom he shared the Ferrari garage in the two-year period 2019-2020: in fact, the champion from Heppenheim has expressed many expressions of esteem towards the Monegasque. Honeyed words, reiterated by the four-time World Champion also in his latest interview, given to the thematic podcast ‘Beyond the Grid’. Sebastian, in fact, candidly admitted that he learned a lot from Charles, despite the significant gap in age and experience in competitions that existed between the two. "Charles came at a very different time in his career and life. It was fun, we got along really well, I really enjoyed the time we spent together and he taught me a few things, not necessarily about driving. It was a bit like I was watching at myself younger, it took me a while to understand that, because obviously my goal was not just to win a race like I did. My goal was to win the World Championship, to win a lot of races." The German champion concluded: "Charles was something special. He has an indescribable amount of talent and the way he can convey that on the qualifying lap, the way he can squeeze the pace out of himself and the car, well, it's just amazing."
Sebastian Vettel described the Monegasque champion this way during his last year in the premier class: "what Leclerc is doing doesn't surprise me. When we were teammates, Charles deservedly beat me, no ifs or buts: there are no other ways to tell it. I have always been convinced that he will achieve important goals in his career, also because at Ferrari we all immediately realized that he had an incredible talent." And, finally, taking a final step back to November 2020: "I am convinced that Charles is the best driver, the best talent of the next era of Formula 1. The brightest star. Better him or Verstappen? Absolutely Leclerc."
Felipe Massa, Williams, with Charles Leclerc, Ferrari.
"Leclerc is one of the best drivers in Formula 1, in my opinion, a key figure like Verstappen at Red Bull and Hamilton at Mercedes." Felipe Massa
