Carlos Sainz in his private, tailor made Ferrari in 2024.
One of the few charismatic drivers in current Formula 1, with some resemblance to the marquis de Portago, Carlos Sainz, although he has the hallmarks of a classic Ferrari driver for being fast, handsome and elegant, is a driver who is generally underrated and who is only fully appreciated when he is about to leave for another team.
Yes, as Carlos is an excellent racer, fast, cold and determined. And with the characteristics of a true champion because he doesn't make mistakes when he has to win.
His speed skills have meant that he has not fallen short of any of his teammates throughout his career, even if they were called Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc.
Above all an intelligent driver. And with an aura of old-fashioned romanticism that leads him to become very attached to the teams he competes for, especially if they have a great reputation.
He is not touchy and has a constructive character that leads him to become friends with his teammates and to create a climate of cohesion in the team.
If we add to this the fact that Carlos is as handsome as the rising sun, elegant and has an undeniable Latin charm that leads him to accompany himself with beautiful girls who make the atmosphere in the paddock glamorous, we get the portrait of the ideal driver not to be missed.
And they know it well at McLaren, who said goodbye to him with a moving video that testifies to the attachment of the entire team for this Spaniard who it is impossible not to like.
And, after McLaren, Carlos landed at Ferrari, his childhood dream.
At the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, the predestined one, the idol of the Red people, where he had to make his way with great difficulty into the hearts of the fans that he won over with his sober style and his wins, some of which beautiful and reminiscent of the greats of the past.
One of those loves that are slow to blossom but then become a bond that is difficult to break.
Also because Carlos declared his eternal love for Ferrari and would never have left her.
So why interrupt this beautiful technical and sentimental story?
To start another equally beautiful one. That of a seven-time world champion who decides to leave the team with which he won everything to embrace Ferrari for the last dance with his beloved Formula 1.
It's hard to say more, it just happened that way.

Carlos Sainz, before learning the news that he would have to leave Ferrari: "I'm in no rush to renew, as I still have another year on my contract. But it's true that at the moment I don't see myself anywhere other than Ferrari, both in the medium and long term. I'm happy here, I have a lot of fun and after every weekend I go home with a smile and the pride of being a Ferrari driver. And, if good results will be also added to this, I think there won't be a better steering wheel than Ferrari’s. When I arrived at Renault in 2018, my team was the best of the others. And so in 2019 and 2020 at McLaren and in 2021 at Ferrari, it's four years in a row. I don't know how much of me is in this statistic, but I like being part of it."
Sainz has been driving for Ferrari since 2021, he will leave the Red at the end of the 2024 season to make room for Lewis Hamilton: "nobody likes to be left and, obviously, it made me feel bad", the Spanish driver said. "Obviously you don't take it well. Nobody likes to be told that they don't want to continue with him. It happened in February. I had very good years at Ferrari, I started the season winning (in Australia), but there was a seven-time world champion called Lewis Hamilton who wanted to come to Ferrari and they made room for him. You can't do anything about that, so I take it philosophically and try to accept it in the best possible way. I also see it as an opportunity for the future, because other opportunities will present themselves and I still want to become world champion, I still want to win".
Carlos Sainz with his former girlfriend Isabel Hernáez. They broke up in 2023.
"Those who know me know that I can laugh and joke like a child. My sisters say I'm very playful, even childish." Carlos has been racing since he was in the first year of middle school. On his life off the track he said: "I've been with Isabel for six years but I'm reserved, I protect love. Social media? A weakness, I realize that we waste our time."

“Ferrari has always treated me the same as Leclerc. Honestly, in that sense I can't complain about the treatment I've received. There are moments of tension in all teams, but that's the competition, you turn the page and forget about it. And the truth is that my teammate and I are friends off the track, we get along very well, we have a great relationship and we form a great team. If there's something that works at Ferrari it's the two of us who win races, get podiums and, above all, work as a team."
Carlos Sainz with Charles Leclerc at the British Grand Prix.
"Charles is more patient and smiles more, when I'm on the circuit I'm more focused on myself. I'll try to soften myself, but I won't change."
And, about his third place and Leclerc's victory at Monaco in 2024, Carlos Sainz said: “I think it means more for the fact that, being a Ferrari driver, being P3, but especially seeing your team-mate that is Monegasque standing on top of the podium in front of his home crowd, in front of all the tifosi and all the mechanics, I think it’s one of the best images I’ve seen in Formula 1 and I was extremely happy for him, for the team.”
"When I was 10 years old I went to Barcelona and met one of my heroes, Michael Schumacher and visited the Ferrari garage. The atmosphere was special, unique. Wearing the red overalls and driving for this team is more than a dream. It is an honor but also a great responsibility." Carlos Sainz Jr
His thoughts then turn to the champions of the past, with whom the Spaniard would have liked to battle: "with the best: Schumacher, Alonso, Senna, Villeneuve. As a teammate I would have liked to have Michael, because I would have learned so much to be a team leader like him."

“No hard feelings towards Ferrari, Carlos added, you can't say no to Hamilton, I understand that. I'm convinced that, if Hamilton hadn't wanted to end his career at Ferrari, I would have renewed the contract. When they told me I wouldn’t continue I didn’t feel as appreciated as I would have liked. Especially for what I gave to Ferrari: I went to live in Maranello for 4 years, I bought a house, I was in the factory working for this team trying to take it forward to win together. It was a tough two or three months between January and February, I went through a difficult phase with the announcement of Hamilton’s arrival and my future changing. And yet life is like that, it’s a bit of a rollercoaster. I quickly understood the situation, I focused on taking advantage of the fact that I was still in the red overalls. As long as it’s like that, I’ll give it my all. I won’t change the way I work. I started on the podium in Bahrain and I won in Melbourne immediately after the surgery, it was a very powerful moment for me and for my career. I was pleased to see the team happy for me because they know what I’ve been through.”
Carlos Sainz at Ferrari.
“The best emotions so far have been all the first times: the first time in the car, the first race, the first pole and the first win at Silverstone. Singapore after a perfect weekend or Australia. Memories that will never be erased. But I want more.”
Carlos Sainz at Ferrari.
I'm sure that, if I could go back, I would do some things differently or better. Lessons that I will take elsewhere. Now I'm thinking about how to win here and then find a home."

And, on his triumph in Mexico in 2024, Sainz said: "I needed this victory, also for myself. I wanted to win at least one more race with Ferrari, to do it in front of this crowd is fantastic. Now there are four races left, I want to enjoy them and, if I have the chance, I will try to repeat myself. I didn't prepare the overtaking on Max: I was angry about the bad start, I wanted to surprise him."

And, finally, about his beloved Ferrari, a declaration of love: “the exact moment you become a Ferrari driver is something you remember forever. You enter the history of the most successful team in F1 and contributing to its successes makes you even more proud. Whatever happens in the next 5 or 10 years, I drove the red and I won with it, even if I leave Ferrari remains a dream that I wouldn't change for anything. All the drivers who have passed through Maranello remain in the fans’ memory: if you were wanted and loved, they will continue to love you wherever you go.”
Quotes about Carlos Sainz
Charles Leclerc with Carlos Sainz on a private plane.
"I will definitely miss Carlos as a teammate. I will miss him first of all as a person. I have almost always been happy with him. Sometimes from the outside you tend to criticize and exaggerate what you see, but we have always been respectful of each other. There were moments when, with the helmet on, I hated him, but it was reciprocated. He also had the opportunity to hate me while we were on the track. However, once we got out of the car, we always had the opportunity to clarify and resolve the arguments that were sometimes inevitable. Sometimes we did not have the same point of view, but we were always able to resolve these differences.” Charles Leclerc

"Carlos has been incredibly consistent over the last year and a half, not only in his results but also in his approach, the quality of his work and his relationship with the engineers and for the team this is crucial. He is a great professional, also in terms of the mood he has brought to the team. Another characteristic of his is that he has a very good technical knowledge of the car and its dynamics. Last year we had some difficult moments with Leclerc, while Sainz performed very well after the summer break between Monza and Singapore. This encouraged Charles to recover and then he achieved six or seven consecutive front rows. Carlos played a very important role in the team's recovery at the end of last season." Frederic Vasseur, August 2024
“Sainz has beaten the best and is a great team player. He can win the world championship.” Marc Gené
“I rate Carlos Sainz as one of the top four drivers, if not at times the number two driver on the grid. Why wouldn’t you want that in your stable?” James Vowles
